Why a worked solution beats a final answer

There's a well-known result in learning research: students who study worked examples before attempting problems outperform students who just do more problems. The reason is that a worked example makes the decision points visible — not only what was done, but why that step was chosen over the alternatives.
The answer is the least useful part
Take a stoichiometry problem. The final answer is a number, maybe 0.42 mol.
It tells you nothing. What you needed was the sequence:
- Balance the equation
- Convert the given mass to moles
- Apply the mole ratio from the balanced equation
- Convert back to whatever the question asked for
Step 3 is where nearly everyone goes wrong, and it's invisible if you only see the number at the end.
What we do differently
AI Tutor is prompted to show its working by default, name the rule or law being applied at each step, and state the final answer separately. It also ends with a practice question — because the fastest way to find out whether an explanation landed is to try the next one yourself.
That practice question is not decoration. Attempt it before you move on. If you can't, the explanation didn't land yet, and that's worth knowing now rather than in the exam.
Use it as a check, not a crutch
The most effective pattern we see: attempt the problem first, get stuck, ask, then redo the problem from scratch without looking. The redo is what moves it into memory.
